SUPPORT FOR IMMIGRANT MINORITY CHILDREN AND YOUTH - FÖRMIG

The launch of the model program "Förderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund FÖRMIG" (Support for immigrant minority children and youth) was on 1st September 2004. The pilot scheme is being funded over five years by the Bund-Länder Commision for Educational Planning and Reasearch Promotion. The Federal States (Länder) of Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Sachsen, and Schleswig-Holstein are participating in the program.

The program aims to foster innovative approaches by the Federal States (Länder) in the field of language education, to evaluate them and facilitate a transfer of good practice as well as to supply data for future educational planning.

Final conference for the Model Program "FÖRMIG - Förderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund"
June 11-13, 2009 at the University of Hamburg

August 2009 will mark the end of the five-year pilot program "FÖRMIG- Förderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund" in which 10 Bundeslaender participated. The conference will provide information on key products and results from the program:

  • Spoke diagnostic approaches to measurement and process monitoring of bilingual education and language skills;
  • Policies for the promotion of linguistic skills education in multilingual constellations;
  • Development of local language education and regional networks;
  • Qualification for teaching staff to promote education and German language skills as a second language.
